About

I’m Wendy, a trained technical writer with two decades of experience working with clients and stakeholders in web design, web hosting, content management, open-source communities, and non-profit organizations.

Philosophy

When documentation is intentionally and thoughtfully written and organized for the audience it intends to serve, it empowers people to get the most out of the information available to them. It saves time, enriches user experience, and lays a path for future growth and learning.

On the other hand, poorly written and(or) disorganized documentation frustrates an audience and can render products, services, and tools, unusable.

I love technical writing because it provides solutions: With a solid and proven systems development lifecycle approach, effective documentation can be written from scratch, and poor documentation can be revised to meet stakeholders’ needs.

Experience

My technical writing journey began while working at a local hardware retailer, where I wrote and taught training course modules for sales staff.

I soon moved on to website design and development. As a website designer, I became interested in content management systems and soon found the Joomla open-source community. There, I worked on various teams and the board of directors, writing communications to help bridge community members and ideas for our International user base.

The web hosting industry was a natural step from website design. Working for a privately owned hosting provider for over a decade, I write technical how-to articles, proposals, executive emails, and customer service response templates and guides. I love the “a-ha” moments when clients glean new knowledge and feel empowered to handle a technical task they could not previously take on.

My career and volunteer work have provided me with opportunities to work with people from varying industries, learning levels, and international backgrounds.

Through my love of language and writing, I have a knack for explaining complex topics in ways that are universally and easily understood.

Education

During my second year of university, learning general studies, I got a glimpse of the world of website design. I taught myself HTML and CSS and got involved in the Joomla open-source community as a volunteer and later as a board member and leadership team member.

To complement my business and IT skills, I completed Simon Fraser University’s Technical Communications program and was awarded certification with high marks.

I stay informed about new trends in technical writing and continually work to improve and build upon my existing skills and experience.

Goals

I’m interested in full-time technical writing and content management opportunities. However, I am also available for part-time and freelance work.

What’s the Story Behind the Mighty Docs Name?

There’s nothing heroic or epic about technical writing and documentation. It’s there to be used when a reader chooses. If written well, the act of reading it is quickly forgotten, but the knowledge it provides can serve the user for a lifetime. Technical writing is the “small but mighty” genre in the writing universe.
